Armenian talent reaching foreign, larger markets

If you are a freelancer (working on your own for different customers), employee or entrepreneur working in Armenia, you must have asked yourself some of the questions below:

Well, there are a number of websites out there that help match companies and skilled people (e.g. web design) with projects. There are two main types of “markets” where supply meets demand over the Internet:

Freelancing

is the older model, based on what has happened for years in the offline world. People, or companies, post their project needs (e.g. logo) and their willingness to pay. People with skills place bids in a form of reverse auction (lower bid wins) and work on the project. There are several differences in the mechanics of each website, but you get the idea. Crowdsourcing

is a newer model, based on competition. This model approaches the problem differently. The person or company with a need (e.g. logo, piece of code), posts a description of the project with a pre-fixed price. Instead of bids, people work “for free” and submit their work. The person or company who requested the work chooses the alternative that it liked the most. After a few interactions and refinements, the “winner” gets paid. Crowdsourcing websites are a little tricky. They may not provide you with a steady income stream at first, but they can be a great learning experience in terms of

  • Understanding about the demands of end customers
  • Understaning better competitors and the competitive environment (how they do it, how fast, with what quality and price).

This is extremely important for those disconnected from the large demand centers of the world. With the learning experience (and many hours of work that might go unpaid) comes the self-realization that either:

  • There is a skill gap that needs to be addressed, perhaps through more training, practice or interaction with customers

or

  • There was a hidden talent in you that was not explored to its full potential
